Whilst the cottages at Stockham Fam are of course extremely cosy and comfortable, there are a whole host of activities to get you out and about in the local area. Exmoor National Park is the ultimate location for those who love walking, visiting pubs, cycling, horse riding, hunting, shooting, fishing, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, wild swimming and even sunbathing on the glorious Somerset and North Devon beaches that are not far away.
Exmoor National Park covers 265 square miles of Devon and Somerset – 600 miles of public footpaths and bridleways, stunning scenery, blue flag beaches, pretty villages, fascinating history and good food inns.
Wildlife on the heather-clad moorland of Exmoor includes the only herd of wild Red Deer in the UK and the beautiful but endangered Exmoor ponies.
Exmoor is one of Britain’s best kept secrets, as it has fewer tourists than any of our other National Parks. With no main line railways, motorways or airports nearby, it takes a little bit of effort to get here, but it’s definitely worth it!
The Visit Exmoor website is an excellent place to go to find a great choice of things to do and places to go in our fabulous National Park; and if you’re looking for things to do closer to home, take a look at the Visit Dulverton website too.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit nearby Wimbleball Lake (for walking, windsurfing and even high ropes!); the remarkable National Trust properties of Knightshayes Court and Dunster Castle; the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (a splendid 6 mile walk from the cottage – yes, we’ve done it ourselves!); the West Somerset Steam Railway (with stops at Dunster and Minehead); the lovely coastal hamlet of Porlock Weir; the unique twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth and the stunning dog friendly pebble beach at Heddon’s Mouth.
Many of our nearest beaches are dog friendly throughout the year – including the beaches at Heddon’s Mouth, Lynmouth, Minehead and Dunster, all approximately half an hour’s drive away. A 45 minute drive from Stockham will bring you to some of North Devon’s glorious well known beaches such as Saunton Sands (great for galloping on your horse!), Croyde, Woolacombe and Putsborough.
For something a little different, why not try a guided tour (with a cream tea!) at the award-winning Wellhayes Vineyard where they make the most amazing British Sparkling Wine – approx 20 minutes from Stockham through the countryside. Or how does a taster tour of our local distillery sound? Multi-award winning Exmoor Distillery offers delightful tasting tours of their gin, vodka and rum at their distillery just outside Dulverton.
A visit to Exmoor wouldn’t be complete without spotting some of our remarkable wild Red Deer. Hopefully you’ll be able to see (or hear) them from Stockham Farm whilst you’re here; but why not book an Exmoor safari tour with Red Stag Safari or Exmoor Wildlife Safaris to discover the heart of the moor and its glorious wildlife.
